WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man and a woman were fatally shot on Wednesday evening outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Northwest Washington, D.C., according to law enforcement officials. The shooting occurred during an event hosted at the museum.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that both victims were affiliated with a foreign embassy, with at least one believed to be a staff member from the Israeli Embassy.
Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), confirmed that the AJC was hosting an event at the venue at the time. “We are devastated that an unspeakable act of violence occurred outside our gathering,” he said. “As we await more details from law enforcement, our thoughts are with those affected and their families.”
One of the victims was reportedly taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition before succumbing to injuries.
Police are currently questioning a person of interest in connection to the shooting, though no arrests have been confirmed.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro visited the scene shortly after the incident. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bondi said, “Praying for the victims of this violence as we work to learn more.”
Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, condemned the attack in strong terms, calling it “a depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism” on X. “Harming diplomats and the Jewish community is crossing a red line,” he wrote.
The investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected as authorities continue to assess the scene and question witnesses.
